Are you kidding?

From Rick Santorum:

What the Democrats are doing is "the equivalent of Adolf Hitler in 1942 saying, 'I'm in Paris. How dare you invade me. How dare you bomb my city? It's mine.' This is no more the rule of the senate than it was the rule of the senate before not to filibuster."

How do people get away with saying things like this?

I can't even figure out what kind of a point he's making. How is filibustering at all like invading France? This makes less sense than comparing the blockage of nominees to assassination (not "character assassination," mind you--Assassination).

The point he was trying to make is that the Senate is trying to defend something that is not theirs to defend, much like Hitler "defending" Paris. The anology works if you look at it objectively, but it is extremely inappropriate given the implications of the analogy as well as the hypocricy because of the Move-on firestorm that Seeing The Forest mentioned.

ANd of course, for every dumb quote from Santorum, there are at least a dozen completely recockulous quotes from Boxer, Clinton, Pelosi, and Reid just this week alone!

I heard on the radio this morning that Republicans are upset about a MoveOn.org ad that compares Frist with Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars. The ad is pretty cheesy, and in poor taste, but what was great is that Republicans said the ad is outside the boundaries of reasonable political dialogue.

So, just to set things straight:

OK: A leading Republican senator comparing a longstanding Senate practice to Hitler's invasion of France.

Not OK: An independent organization comparing a US senator to a movie villain.

Just remember if it were flipped, the Republicans would be crying foul of changing the senate rules and sadly most Dems wouldn't be objecting either; I would hope we're learning a grand lesson here. I know I am.
