Court Denies Tookie's Appeal

The California Supreme Court denies Tookie's appeal:

The California Supreme Court late Sunday refused to grant a stay of execution for convicted killer Stanley Tookie Williams, meaning the former gang leader who became an outspoken critic of gang violence will be executed early Tuesday unless the governor grants clemency or a last-ditch federal appeal succeeds.

Our last hope is that Governor Schwarzenegger will grant clemency.

It was thought that he would make the announcement Friday evening, but nothing was announced all weekend.

I still hold out hope.

And you can still contact the Governor:

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: 916-445-2841
Fax: 916-445-4633

You can e-mail him here.

TalkLeft has some thoughts for the Governor:

Clemency is about mercy. It is an act of grace. You have the opportunity to stop a needless killing. Tookie's execution will not bring the victims back. It will not heal. The welfare of the people of California is best served by the message clemency would send -- one of hope to the tens of thousands of disadvantaged young people your administration has professed to care so deeply about. A denial of clemency will send a message of despair.

You hold a human life in your hand. We've seen enough killing. Please choose life for Tookie.

The Governor still has the option to do the right thing. He can still choose life.

Stop the violence. Stop the killing.

Yahoo! News says that Gov. A. denied clemency, as well... The outlook isn't good for this one.

But I do sense the tide changing. The more people talk about DP the less they favor it. Just getting a national dialogue going on the issue may be enough to eventually change the laws...
