End of the Scribe
[read update at bottom] Well that did not last long. The Daily Scribe has come to an end. Well, not quite. It was actually abruptly cut-off by the creator of the site - Shawn Anthony. If you are curious as to the reasons, you can view them here. But if you want to know what really went down, read what Colleen has to say. Hopefully something else will rise up out of this. The Daily Scribe was an interesting place with tremendous diversity of voices. Some did not like that. The diversity of voices also created tension between the some of the voices. Certain members of the Scribe did not feel that they could be sincere in their beliefs and be part of a collective of writers who may have contrasting beliefs. This issue did not bother me. I was able to learn from my Jewish, Unitarian Universalist, Buddhist, and Humanist friends. I did not need to agree with everything that they said in order to be part of a community with them. Others were unable to see past this. The Daily Scribe was a place of religion. It was a place that encouraged diversity and differences. It was a place that filled with brilliant writers and thinkers that I continually learned from. It is sad to me that there are still huge walls up that make any dialog extremely difficult. I will keep reading these blogs. And The Daily Scribe will possibly be back, just in a new form. UPDATE: For other thoughts, check out some of these. I will try to continue updating this:
I will be honest. It is difficult to not "attack" the way that Shawn has handled that. I have liked my limited interactions that I have had with Shawn. But I am extremely disappointed at how this has been handled. Lets hope that we can all move on from this soon... 0/24: It looks like the Scibe is back up...you can read more here from Shawn. I still don't really get the whole thing. Now it looks like he did it as an experiment to piss people off to see who his "true friends" were. I don't know... Like I said, I have like my interactions with Shawn. And I most definitely understand the need to follow your convictions, and that is not always an easy thing to do. I hope that all of us can learn from this and we can move on in a positive direction from here. I wish him the best, and I hope that he is able to feel at home with the BIC in his new-found Christian convictions. But I am glad that The Daily Scribe is back. Comments, Pingbacks:
It is such a shame that this site has closed down. In the current religious and political world climate, tolerance of others is something that needs to be fostered and encouraged. I do not believe in God, but that doesn't mean that I can't learn something from those who do. The more diverse people I am in contact with, the richer my life is. While his dedication to his faith is admirable, it's unfortunate that Shawn Anthony did not feel who could use The Daily Scribe as a preaching point to share his beliefs with others whom despite not necessarily thinking the same way, had already shown a willingness to listen.
Bummer... I'd like to talk to you, about this... e-mail me, if you would.
FWIW, there is a new post on LoFiTribe explaining the 500 error. If it influences the way you want to characterize the events, you might want to amend or update your posts.
Yea...I just updated the post.
I think I commented just as you hit submit:)
