Marriage and Consent
Posted by Dave Email on 03/29/07 at 04:17:11 pm

From Phyllis Schlafly, conservative right wing anti-feminist:

At one point, Schlafly also contended that married women cannot be sexually assaulted by their husbands.

"By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don't think you can call it rape," she said.

WHAT?!?!

You have to be kidding me. So any woman who is married can be sexually assaulted by her spouse for the simple fact that she is married. And therefore has consented to any and all sexual activity.

You have to be kidding me.

I've always wanted to be sexually assaulted by my wife but after 25 years I have pretty much given up on the idea.

Wow, she pushes my buttons. Marriage is about a relationship. There's a lot more to this consent and marriage thing than what she is talking about at the surface level. We are supposed to be moving further away from this mindset of anti-feminism, not hanging onto its dangerous effects on society.
And by the way, why doesn't anyone talk about sexually assaulting their husbands? I do it all the time, but I make sure he likes it.

Yeah, John Stuart Mill railed against her position in, oh, 1869. Most thinkers have moved on from there, recognizing that marriage does not equal blanket "consent" to any and all sexual acts by the husband.

I've read some blog discussions from conservative Christians on this topic, defending this stance on the basis of Paul's admonition that the bodies of the husband and wife belong to one another. Not to be too specific, but the focus was on what to do when the wife was pregnant (late term) or otherwise not available vaginally. I was horrified by what I read.
